Marcos tells PSC to extend assistance to Lydia de Vega

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has instructed the Philippine Sports Commission to extend assistance to Philippine sports legend Lydia de Vega who is battling Stage 4 breast cancer.

This was confirmed by PSC executive secretary and officer-in-charge Atty. Guillermo Iroy Jr. to GMA News Online on Thursday.

"Yes it's the direct instruction of the PBBM to extend necessary assistance to Diay (de Vega) and was so sad upon learning the situation of Lydia de Vega," Iroy said in a Viber message.

De Vega's family is seeking for support as the Philippine Track and Field legend is "in very critical condition" due to complications caused by her breast cancer.

De Vega, who was considered back in the day as Asia's fastest woman, is a two-time gold medalist in the Asian Games and was a bemedaled athlete in different editions of the Southeast Asian Games in which she competed.

She was one of the flag bearers of the SEA Games Federation flag, along with other Filipino sports legends, during the 2019 edition of the biennial meet held in the country. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
