Pinoy skaters celebrate Go Skateboarding Day 2022

Filipino skaters celebrated the return of Go Skateboarding Day for the first time since the pandemic began.

According to Jhomer Apresto's report on "24 Oras," hundreds of skaters joined the Skate Parade from Liwasang Bonifacio to the Manila Skate Park in Paco on Saturday.

Organizers aim to promote more awareness that skateboarding is a sport that people of all ages can try.

"Ang history niyan, 'yung skateboarding kasi kaya kung napapansin n'yo, naririnig 'yung 'skateboarding is not a crime,'" said Richard Espiritu, President of One Manila Organization.

("The history of this is that you may have noticed that you frequently hear, 'skateboarding is not a crime.'")

"Parati siyang hinuhuli so nakukulong kami, nakikipag-away minsan sa mga security guard kasi hindi nga nila naiintindihan," he continued.

("Skateboarders are always arrested so we go to jail, we have to fight with security guards because they do not understand.")

Espiritu said they want to support skaters in honing their skills.

"Ang talagang gusto naming mangyari is makapagpatayo ng isang facility para sa mga skateboarders, not only skateboarders but extreme sports enthusiasts."

("We want to build a facility for the skateboarders, and not just skateboarders but extreme sports enthusiasts.")

Skateboarding made its Olympic debut in the Tokyo Games last year. Asian Games 2018 gold medalist Margielyn Didal represented the Philippines in the Olympiad and won admiration all over the world for her charming personality.
