Canelo vs. GGG trilogy announced for September
The third and final encounter between undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is finally set to take place on September 17 at a yet-to-be-determined venue.
“I'm really happy to bring you the best fights and this one will be no exception. It's time to end what we started and defend our titles. Canelo-GGG 3 this September 17th venue to be confirmed,” Alvarez announced on Facebook.
The pair of hard-hitting boxing superstars first shared the ring in 2017 in a bout that ended in a disputed draw. They fought again a year later where Alvarez won the bout by way of majority decision.
Golovkin has called out for a grudge match since that fateful evening but it never came to fruition until nearly four years after. In his last outing, Golovkin defeated Ryota Murata via technical knockout to unify the IBF and WBA world middleweight titles.
Canelo, on the other hand, has moved up a division since beating Golovkin. He last fought earlier this month against WBA world light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol where he lost via unanimous decision.
The highly-anticipated third encounter between Alvarez and Golovkin will take place in the 168-pound division where the former is slated to put his WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF world super middleweight titles on the line. — LA, GMA News
