Covington targets Dustin Poirier after UFC 272 win over Masvidal

Former UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington wants Dustin Poirier next following his dominant victory over fan-favorite Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 272 this Sunday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, USA.

Covington, who is 0-2 against the reigning UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, says getting another shot at the title remains his top priority. But with Usman out because of recent hand surgery, the brash American has turned his crosshairs to Poirier instead.

“What's next is Dustin, he said he's on sight. Let's fight, man. He wants to come up and fight Nate [Diaz] at 170, he doesn't have a fight, Nate is fighting Conor [McGregor]. He has to come take this losing paycheck just like his boy Jorge did,” Covington said at the UFC 272 post-fight press con.

Poirier, one of the fighters out of the renowned American Top Team, used to be teammates with Covington. The pair have previously engaged in verbal warfare making Covington want to fight Poirier after he defeated Masvidal.

“Nothing in there surprised me. I whooped his (Masvidal) ass from second one to minute 25. You can see in his body language he had nothing left in the fight. I was ready for five more rounds in the parking lot,” said Coving ton

“If he wants to keep doing this, we go five more rounds in the parking lot. Bring out another guy. American Trash Team, they keep sending guys to me but just don't expect to get them back in one piece. I am ready to take on two of those fighters in one night.”
