Asa Miller looks to bounce back in slalom event after a DNF in giant slalom
Asa Miller will look to save his 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics campaign on Wednesday when he competes in the men's slalom event of the Games.
The 21-year-old Filipino-American alpine skier had a difficult opening to his campaign over the weekend, registering a DNF (did not finish) in the giant slalom where 33 other participants were also not able to complete their run.
Two skiers, meanwhile, had DNS (did not start) results.
Of the 89 participants, only 54 were able to continue in the second run later in the day.
Miller took the day off on Monday to shake his disappointment off but immediately returned to the practice course on Tuesday to reset his focus leading to his last event.
"Trust your feet and trust yourself as the skier you are,” American coach Will Gregorak told his Olympian ward in between training runs.
“It’s similar to what I told you before—the best you can possibly ski on race day is to ski like yourself.”
The Portland-born Miller is looking to surpass his 70th place finish in his previous Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Korea in 2018.
During that edition, Miller clocked one minute and 27.52 seconds in the first run while he had one minute and 22.43 seconds in the second for a total of two minutes and 49.95 seconds in the giant slalom.
Gregorak, though, told Miller to just keep his head high and his focus and morale intact.
“You’re not going to become another person and you are already an excellent skier,” the 31-year-old coach told Miller.
“All you have to do is find the feeling that you already know.”
The first run of the men's slalom event will start at 10:15 while the second run is at 1:45 at the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre.
