EJ Obiena clears 5.93m to set new national, Asian records in Austria
EJ Obiena continues to break records in pole vault.
On Saturday (Austria time), the Filipino Olympian cleared the 5.93-meter mark to bag the gold in the 17th International Golden Roof Challenge in Innsbruck.
The pole vaulter had two attempts at 5.80 meters before successfully clearing the 5.93 mark with three attempts.
With his performance, Obiena set the new Asian record, which was previously at 5.92 meters with Igor Potapovich of Kazakhstan.
The new record also gave Obiena his new personal best and national record, which he previously held at 5.91-meters after competing in the Paris Diamond League in August.
American Matt Ludwig placed second with 5.60 meters, while Ersu Sasma of Turkey settled for third with the same record.
Obiena recently competed in the Diamond League Finals in Zurich, Switzerland where he placed fourth.
