Alex Eala barges into US Open juniors singles QF with rout of Greek foe
Alex Eala's quest for a third Grand Slam title remains alive as she edged out Greek Michaela Laki, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, in the Round of 16 of the 2021 US Open girls' singles tournament in New York City early Thursday (Manila time).
She now moves on to the quarterfinals round where she will face the winner of the match between Sebastianna Scilipoti of Switzerland and Sofia Costoulas of Belgium.
The clash between Eala and Laki, though, is not yet done as they will face anew in the doubles division later today where the Filipina teams up with Hanne Vandewinkel of Belgium while the Greek forms duo with Slovakia's Radka Zelnickova.
Eala on Wednesday made quick work of hometown bet Charlotte Owensby in the Round of 32, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the next round.
Eala, a scholar of the Rafa Nadal Academy, has two Grand Slam titles under her belt after she ruled the girls' doubles tiff of both the 2021 French Open and 2020 Australian Open with different partners.
The young netter also saw action in this year's Wimbledon, the oldest of the four Grand Slams, but fell short in both the singles and doubles division. -- BAP, GMA News
