Alex Eala kicks off US Open campaign
Alex Eala is all primed to kick off her maiden US Open appearance in her bid to score her first singles and third overall Grand Slam crown.
The young Filipina netter will be facing Charlotte Owensby of the United States in the Round of 32 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday (Manila time).
Owensby, 18, bested Pimrada Jattavapornvanit of Thailand during their first round clash.
Eala, now the world no. 2 junior player in the world, earned an outright berth for the second round after drawing a bye in the first round.
The Rafa Nadal Academy scholar will also join the doubles division where she will form a tandem with Belgium's Hanne Vandewinkel, who ranks no. 37 in the world.
Seeded second in the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year, Eala looks to replicate her success in the 2021 French Open where she ruled the tournament along with Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva.
She bagged her first-ever Grand Slam title when she and Indonesian partner Priska Nugroho topped the 2020 Australian Open.
She also saw action in this year's Wimbledon, the oldest of the four Grand Slams but fell short in both the singles and doubles division. — LA, GMA News
