Carlos Yulo falls just short of Olympic medal in vault finals

Carlos Yulo fell just short of bagging a medal in the Tokyo Games.

He tallied 14.716 to finish fourth overall in the vault finals of the artistic gymnastics at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Monday at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre.

South Korea's Shin Jeahwan took the gold medal with a total score of 14.783.

The ROC's Denis Abliazin also scored 14.783 but settled for the silver, while Armenia's Artur Davtyan clinched the bronze with a 14.733.

Yulo's first run was given a score of 14.566 after a -0.1 penalty was given on his landing. But he did a strong second vault that got him earned him a 14.866 score, one of the highest of any of the competitors in these finals.

Only Turkey's Adem Asil was able to score higher in a single vault, with his first attempt netting a 15.266. The highest the gold medalist, Shin, was able to score was a 14.833, but his consistency allowed him to set the best overall score.

With a solid showing here, the 21-year-old redeemed himself from a tough outing during the qualifications round.

He didn't make it to the top 8 of his favorite event, the floor, after placing 44th with a score of 13.566.

He also finished with a score of 14.000 in the rings, 13.466 in the parallel bars, 12.300 in the horizontal bar, and 11.833 in the pommel horse---all of which were not enough to earn himself a finals ticket.

Yulo, however, wound up in sixth place after tallying 14.712 in the vault to clinch a finals seat.
