Hidilyn's key to success: Surround yourself with people who will help you

Hidilyn Diaz may have been the one who lifted 127 kg to win the country's first Olympic gold medal, but she attributes a lot of her success to her support system.

Dubbed "Team HD," a group of four experts joined forces to guide Hidilyn in her Tokyo campaign: veteran weightlifting coach Gao Kaiwen, conditioning coach Julius Naranjo, nutritionist Jeaneth Aro, and sports psychologist Dr. Karen Trinidad.

In an interview with "24 Oras" anchors Mel Tiangco, Mike Enriquez, and Atom Araullo, Thursday, the star weightlifter said one of the keys to her Olympic breakthrough is the people by her side.

"Surround yourself with the people that will help you. Like me, I am surrounded with Team HD na tinulungan ako, na nag-stay [who helped me, who stayed] during pandemic," she said.

Aside from having a sold squad behind her, Hidilyn said it is important to have a dream and to dream high.

"Kung wala kasing pangarap medyo walang direksyon di ba? Kailangan may direksyon, kailangan may pangarap," she said. "Then you need to do the work, you need to work hard and train smart."

("If there is no dream, it's like there is no direction, right? You need direction, you need a dream.")

She also encouraged aspiring weightlifters to keep believing in themselves and never give up despite the pandemic and other challenges which may come their way.

"Every time na ginagawa n'yo 'yung kailangan n'yong gawin sa training, do your best and wala kayong pagsisising mararamdaman kasi ginawa nyo 'yung best n'yo," she said.

("Every time you do what you need to do in training, do you best and you won't feel any regrets because you did your best.")
