Japanese coach takes responsibility for Carlos Yulo's tough Olympic debut

Munehiro Kugimiya, the Japanese coach that oversees the development of Carlos Yulo, took to social media to take full responsibility for the performance of his ward in the Tokyo Olympics.

Out of six apparatus in the artistic gymnastics event, the 21-year-old Yulo qualified to the finals of only one--the vault.

He was unable to make it to the top 8 of his favorite event, the floor, after placing 44th with a score of 13.566.

Yulo also finished with scores of 14.000 in the rings, 13.466 in the parallel bars, 12.300 in the horizontal bar, and 11.833 in the pommel horse---all of which were not enough to earn himself a finals ticket.

And Kugimiya said he will shoulder all the blame as Yulo, who was tipped as the country's best bet for a gold medal, fell short of meeting the expectations.

"If you want to blame, please say [it] to his coach," Kugimiya posted on Facebook early Monday.

"If you want to say waste, please say [it] to his coach."

The job, though, is not done for the Filipino wunderkind. He will still compete on August 2 in the vault finals with hopes of ending his maiden Olympic stint on a high note.

"The path we have taken is not easy. I promise this experience [will] make him stronger than now," Kugimiya added.
