Cris Nievarez ends Olympic campaign after placing fifth in rowing QF
Cris Nievarez formally put an end to his Olympic campaign.
The young Filipino rower finished fifth in the quarterfinal round of men's singles sculls of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Sunday morning at the Sea Forest Waterway, Japan.
He clocked in at 7 minutes and 50.74 seconds to finish outside of the top 3, which would have earned him an outright berth to the semis.
Germany's Oliver Zeidler topped the Heat 4 (7:12.75) while coming in second and third place were Luca Verthein Ferreira of Brazil (7:14.26) and Mindaugas Griskonis of Lithuania (7:16.71).
Nievarez, though, will still see action in semifinal C/D but only to determine his placing.
Last Friday, the 21-year-old rower finished third in the men’s singles sculls heat 5 after clocking 7:22.97 to earn a berth in the quarterfinals.
Nievarez had an impressive campaign during the 2021 Asia and Oceania Olympic Continental Qualification Regatta in Tokyo, Japan in May, wound up ninth in the overall rankings after a winless run.
