The Philippines at the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony


The Philippines only had eight individuals in the Parade of Nations of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics but they still stood out in the Parade of Nations part of the program held Friday.

In photos posted by the Philippine Olympic Committee  (POC) on Instagram and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) on Facebook, Philippine sports officials, such as Olympic chef de mission Mariano "Nonong" Araneta, and some of the coaches were seen wearing pieces of Barong Tagalog and blazers made from cocoon silk. An alampay designed by Rajo Laurel was also added.

Flag bearers of the country, boxer Eumir Marcial and judoka Kiyomi Watanabe had their red track suit.

POC president Rep. Abraham Tolentino, POC Sec-Gen Atty. Edwin Gastanes, and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William Ramirez were also inside the stadium, according to a post by the PSC.

The Philippines have a total of 19 athletes competing in the Tokyo Games.
