Alex Eala dispatches Argentinian foe in impressive Wimbledon debut
Filipina teen tennis sensation Alex Eala made quick work of Solana Sierra of Argentina, 6-2, 6-4, to kick off her much-awaited debut in the Wimbledon girls singles tournament in London on Monday night (Manila time).
The match lasted for 1 hour and 4 minutes as the 16-year-old ace advanced to the second round of tennis' oldest Grand Slam event.
Eala, whole ranks no. 3 in junior world rankings, impressed from the get-go as she quickly snared the first game in the first set before Sierra stole the second set. She then made adjustments in her game plan and won five straight games.
Sierra, though, worked on her serves to win the seventh game before Eala sealed the set after capturing the eighth game, 6-2.
Eala, who was seeded second in the tournament, continued her fine showing in the second set.
She won games one through three before Sierra pumped life back to her campaign and won the two succeeding games.
But Eala, who only had 18 unforced errors, still walked away with the win with a 6-4 second set victory.
Prior to the tournament, the two-time juniors Grand Slam winner saw action in the Junior International Roehampton where she reached the quarterfinals of the singles event.
