EJ Obiena finishes fourth against fellow Tokyo bets in prestigious Stockholm meet
EJ Obiena failed to finish on the podium in his most recent tournament ahead of his debut in the Tokyo Olympics.
The Filipino pole vault champion settled for fourth place after clearing the 5.82-meter mark in the prestigious Wanda Diamond League on Sunday night where he faced his fellow bets in the upcoming Summer Games like Armand Duplantis of Sweden.
World no. 1 Duplantis finished with the gold after he registered an impressive 6.02 meters while Sam Kendricks of the United States captured the silver with 5.92 meters.
Renaud Lavillenie of France wound up in third place after also clearing 5.92 but only in his third attempt.
The 25-year-old Obiena, who was the first Filipino to qualify for this year's quadrennial meet, recently won gold in the Taby Stav Gala Street Pole Vault in Sweden after clearing the 5.80-meter mark.
Obiena, who ranks no. 10 in the world, is looking to join more competitions with days left before the Tokyo Olympics fires off late this month.
