Olympic-bound EJ Obiena shatters Philippine record anew in Poland tilt

EJ Obiena is not done rewriting the sports record books.

The Filipino pole vault champion won a silver medal in the Irena Szewinska Memorial Cup held in Bydgoszcz, Poland on Wednesday (Thursday, Manila time).

The Tokyo-bound athlete cleared 5.87 meters, shattering the national record he set in Germany last June 12 when he won gold with 5.85 meters.

Christopher Nielsen of the United States cleared 5.92 meters to take home the gold while home bet Piotr Lisek settled for the bronze medal with 5.82 meters.

Obiena, 25, said he was nothing but grateful for yet another historic feat but said the work continues as he vies for the elusive gold in the Summer Games.

"Battle of athletes from 5 continents and managed a 2nd place finish," he said in a Facebook post. "Grateful but more needs to be done."

Prior to the Poland meet, Obiena shared a gold medal with training partner and 2016 Olympic champion Thiago Braz in the True Athletes Classics in Leverkusen, Germany.
