Chris Weidman undergoes successful surgery
Former UFC middleweight world champion Chris Weidman had a successful surgery following a freak accident on the undercard of UFC 261 this past Sunday.
Weidman, 36, broke his right leg after throwing a leg kick that landed on the side of the knee of Uriah Hall. He instantly lost his balance and screamed in pain, losing via technical knockout just 17 seconds into the first round.
"Well that was horrible. Freak things happen in life and plans get crushed. It’s been a lonnnggg day but so happy to finally see this man of mine post-surgery. Everything went well thank you Lord,” Weidman’s wife Marivi wrote on Instagram.
"My heart breaks for my husband because I know the work and dedication that he puts into his training every day and the great man that he is, so I only want the best for him.”
The accident was reminiscent of Weidman’s rematch with ex-UFC middleweight world champion Anderson Silva as the latter suffered the same in 2013.
Fans and fighters alike, including Silva himself, wished the former champ a speedy recovery shortly after the bout. Their words of encouragement did not go unnoticed as Marivi cited how overwhelmed they are for the outpouring of support from all over the world.
“While this absolutely sucks in the moment and for some weeks to come, we are completely overwhelmed by the love and support we have far and wide and are very aware how blessed we are.” —JM Siasat/JMB, GMA News
