Denice Zamboanga earns title shot against Angela Lee; Honorio Banario beats Wiratchai
Filipina atomweight prospect Denice Zamboanga has earned herself a world title shot following a spectacular performance against Mei Yamaguchi at ONE: King of the Jungle Friday night at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Zamboanga's hands found its mark as early as the opening round as she repeatedly utilized her boxing to murk the former world title challenger from Japan. Yamaguchi tried to take the fight on the mat, but the Filipina's takedown defense proved to be a handful for the Japanese.
After three rounds of what turned out to be a boxing clinic, all three judges saw the fight in favor of Zamboanga. The dominant performance also earned the Filipina a shot at Angela Lee's ONE women's atomweight world title.
Team Lakay's Honorio Banario also saw action on the undercard where he locked horns with the hard-hitting Shannon Wiratchai of Thailand.
Banario, who went back down to the featherweight division where he won the inaugural world title back in 2013, utilized his wushu kicks and takedowns to pacify Wiratchai's relentless offense.
Banario was awarded a split decision nod after three five-minute rounds as and improved his record to 15-10. — BAP, GMA News
