Casugay was competing in the men's longboard competition for surfing when Indonesia's Arip Nurhidayat broke his leash. Seeing a colleague being swept by the waves, Casugay made sure to rescue Nurhidayat first, not minding that he is in a competition.
Casugay eventually bagged gold in the event.
Casugay's heroic deed had gone viral on social media, earning praises from the public.
Even Indonesian President Joko Widodo praised Casugay's act.
Aside from being the flag bearer, the PSC will also offer a special plaque of recognition and a cash incentive for his heroic act on Friday.
"I will include Roger in our awarding in Malacañang to meet the President," Ramirez said.
The closing rites of the biennial meet will be held on December 11, Wednesday, in the New Clark City Athletics Stadium. —Ma. Angelica Garcia/JST, GMA News
