Ahead of 'One Legends of the World', Eduard Folayang and Martin Nguyen face off
At the Grand Ballroom of City of Dreams on Tuesday, November 7, Filipino One Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang faced off with Vietnamese-Australian One featherweight world champ Martin Nguyen ahead of One: Legends, which they will headline on Friday, November 10 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
“Representing the Philippines and showcasing my skills is an honor for me,” the 33-year-old Baguio native Folayang said. “Winning this bout is my top priority, to keep this belt on my shoulder. It is going to be tough, but I have my people to support me. I want to make everyone proud. I want to show the fans that Filipino athletes are world-class.”
For his part, Nguyen said he’s “worked very hard to be in the position. Eduard Folayang is a great champion and embodies the true values of martial arts. I know chances like this are very rare…2017 has already been a big year for me and I am looking to end it with another belt on my shoulder.”
The cross-divisional showdown between the two is much-anticipated. Folayang, who is defending his title, belongs to the legendary Team Lakay in Baguio City. After amassing an impressive 18-5 record in nearly a decade, Folayang aka “Landslide” is riding a four-bout winning streak. Last April, he showcased a highly-improved wrestling and grappling arsenal, defeating top challenge Ev Ting.
“Situ-Asian”, as the 28-year-old Nguyen is known, is one of the most talented featherweights in martial arts. His most recent battle in August is also his biggest: In Kuala Lumpur, Nguyen stopped former undefeated featherweight champion Marat “Cobra” Gafurov, capturing the One Featherweight World Championship belt.
Filipino Danny Kingad and Brazil’s Adriano Moraes, who will battle it out for Flyweight World Championship, and Korea’s Kevin Chung and Philippines’ Kevin Belingon, who will go up against each other in Batam weight, were also present at the kick-off. — LA, GMA News
