NFL: Saints give safety Byrd a six-year deal
The Saints' financial constraints didn't stop New Orleans from adding a star player Tuesday on the first day of NFL free agency.
Safety Jairus Byrd agreed to a six-year contract, the teams announced. While the Saints did not reveal the monetary details, ESPN reported that Byrd's $54 million deal includes $28 million in guarantees.

Byrd, 27, spent the past five seasons with the Buffalo Bills, making the Pro Bowl three times.
"We had hoped for the opportunity to pursue Jairus Byrd," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said in a statement. "After meeting with him, we are excited that he will become a member of the New Orleans Saints. We think that his play-making abilities will be an excellent fit with what we are trying to accomplish with our defense and in our secondary."
Byrd missed the opening five games of 2013 because of a foot injury, the first time he missed action since he was a rookie in 2009. He ended last season with four interceptions, 48 tackles, six passes defensed and one sack.
Nine of Byrd's 22 career interceptions came in his rookie season, a year in which he also registered a career-high 11 passes defensed.
