Filipinas down Chinese Taipei in Olympic qualifiers

Bolden, Filipinas down Chinese Taipei in Olympic qualifiers

The Philippine national women's football team Filipinas took down Chinese Taipei, 4-1, in the opening match of their second round campaign in the 2024 AFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament at the Perth Rectangular Stadium in Australia on Thursday.

After a goalless first half, Chinese Taipei had the first advantage as it had a goal from Hsu Yi Yun.

The Philippines, however, answered as Sarina Bolden converted a penalty kick at the 54th minute.

It took around seven more minutes for Katrina Guillou to score one of her own after a pass by Tahnnai Anis and double the Philippines' lead.

Bolden was the gift that keeps on giving as she scored her 28th international goal at the 83rd minute, while Chandler McDaniel's goal at the 90th minute sealed the deal for the Filipinas.

The Filipinas need to finish at the top of Group A, which also has Australia and Iran, or be the best among the group runners-up to advance to the third round of the qualifiers.

Previously, the Philippines swept its first round matches after taking down Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Hong Kong.

The Philippines will face Australia next on Sunday and Iran on Wednesday.
