Alen Stajcic named new Perth Glory head coach in top Australian league

After leading the Philippine women's football team for the past 21 months, Alen Stajcic will now call the shots for Perth Glory in Australia's top-tier A-League for men's football.

Perth formally named Stajcic its new head coach on Thursday as the 49-year-old Australian tactician will return to his homeland.

“I vividly recall the late 90s and early 2000s when Perth Glory revolutionised the National League with its connection to the city, its level of support and a team that was leading the way on the pitch,” Stajcic said in a statement.

“I believe an incredible opportunity now exists to re-establish Glory as one of the giants of Australian football and that vision is one shared by everyone at the club."

Perth finished ninth in the 2022-2023 season, racking up seven wins and eight losses. The club hasn't won a championship in the A-League, but Perth CEO Anthony Radich believes that Stajcic's arrival will make a huge difference.

“I am highly delighted and proud on behalf of our Members and supporters that we have been able to secure Alen as the new Head Coach of Perth Glory Football Club,” Radich said.

“He is someone who possesses all the attributes required to take this club forward both on and off the field and is the high-calibre appointment that Perth Glory needs and deserves."

Under Stajcic, the Filipinas reached the FIFA Women's World Cup for the first ever in history and was even able to upset co-host New Zealand before they ultimately bow out of contention with a loss to Norway.

Just days after their World Cup stint, Filipinas team manager Jeff Cheng announced that Stajcic's contract has expired and won't renew a fresh pact to explore other options.
