Filipinas' Sarina Bolden and her football journey
Philippine national women's football team forward Sarina Bolden's name will forever be etched in the history of Philippine sports as she delivered the country's first goal in a World Cup match which led to the Filipinas' first win in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The goal is her 22nd internationally in her career as a member of the national team.
Bolden joined the national team in 2018 and first participated for the squad in the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup, where she made her first goal for the country.
Prior to her historic goal in the World Cup, the 27-year old Filipino-American midfielder played in a few clubs professionally.
Bolden started her professional career in 2019 with the Sandvikens IF in Sweden, and had stints in different clubs in Taiwan, United States, and Japan. She is currently playing for the Western Sydney Wanderers, which she joined in late 2022.
Back in her collegiate years, Bolden played for the Loyola Marymount Lions in the United States where she registered 18 total career goals.
While she may have delivered a lot of goals already, Bolden was still overwhelmed with the win against New Zealand on Tuesday.
"It’s a lot of feelings right now. We put a lot of work into this and almost two years of sacrifice, commitment, dedication, work. Been a lot of ups, been a lot of downs to be able to achieve this goal of ours, to get a win, to score," she said.
The Philippines will face Norway next on Sunday for their final game in the group stage of the World Cup.
