Filipinas' coach Stajcic hopes team continues to be competitive in next Women's World Cup match

As the Philippine national women's football team heads to Wellington for their next match against co-hosts New Zealand in the FIFA Women's World Cup on Tuesday, Filipinas head coach Alen Stajcic said they are looking forward to improving to be more competitive against the Ferns.

Stajcic in the post-match conference last Friday said the Filipinas were impressive in containing their emotions during the match.

"The first time you come to the World Cup, you expect nerves, you expect people to really suffer from the occasion, but I think our players did not show that today. Their qualities were amazing," the Filipinas head coach said.

"We were a little bit unlucky with the offside goal early in the game. I think it was offside. But if that call goes our way, maybe the game changes a little bit as well," Stajcic said, referring to Katrina Guillou's offside at the 15th minute mark which somehow put the hopes up for the Philippine team.

"We showed that we are competitive and that's the main thing."

Stajcic said their next opponent New Zealand will also be a competitive team as the Ferns won 2-1 against the Filipinas in a friendly last year. However, there is still a chance to give the co-hosts a good fight.

"We know that if we can improve a little bit, we can certainly be competitive in that game," said Stajcic.

The Filipinas head coach is also grateful for the support the team is receiving from Filipinos in New Zealand.

"For the players to feel that energy and emotion is almost surreal."
