Hans Michael Weiss back as Philippine Azkals head coach
The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is set to bring back Hans Michael Weiss as the head coach of the Philippine Azkals, the football body announced on Tuesday.
Weiss will return to the post nearly 10 years after parting ways with the national team back in January 2014.
“We are delighted to welcome coach Weiss back to the PHI MNT,” said PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta.
“He has kept the Philippines close to his heart and continues to be a well-respected figure by players and staff."
Weiss previously had coaching stints in Romania with first division club Otelul Galati and the national teams of Mongolia from 2017 to 2020 and Laos from 2022 to 2023.
In his return to Azkals' camp, Weiss, who had 21 wins, 11 draws, and 12 losses as the Philippines' coach in the past, will immediately call the shots when the nationals take on a pair of friendly matches against Nepal on June 15 and Chinese-Taipei on June 19 with both matches set to be played at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
"He has also gained valuable experience over the past decade that will help him in his return to the Philippines. We are hopeful that his second opportunity to the team will be more successful than the first," Araneta added.
