Filipinas clinch historic first AFF Women's Championship crown
It was another historic night for Philippine football.
On Sunday, the Philippine national women's football team made history as it won its first title in the AFF Women's Championship after defeating Thailand, 3-0, in the finals of the 2022 edition of the tournament played in front of a jam-packed Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
The Filipinas got hot early in the game, with the first goal made by Jessika Cowart from a corner by Tahnai Annis in the eighth minute. Katrina Guillou then doubled the Filipinas’ lead with her goal at the 20th minute. Sarina Bolden added a late goal in the 89th minute to seal the win.
The Filipinas had its share of adversity to overcome during the Women's Championship.
While it blanked its first three opponents Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia, the Filipinas conceded its first goal against Indonesia, although they still won 4-1.
Then came finals opponent Thailand, which put them at the second spot of their group after falling short, 0-1.
In the semis, the Philippines faced SEA Games champion Vietnam, where they won with four goals.
In January, the women's team booked a spot to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup after defeating Chinese Taipei in the AFC Asian Women's Cup.
