WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

Azkals play North Korea to scoreless draw in Pyongyang

The Philippines held powerhouse North Korea to a scoreless draw in the World Cup qualifiers on Thursday in Pyongyang.

The East Asian side, while only five places higher in the FIFA rankings at No. 129, came into the match against the Azkals as heavy favorites, having scored victories over Bahrain, Uzbekistan, and Yemen earlier in the group competition.

But even in front of its home crowd, North Korea could not deliver a blow against the gritty Pinoys.

The Azkals were able to weather the aggressive attacks of their favored opponents, holding their ground to avoid dropping the away-game.

With the draw, the team earned an important point especially after losing to Uzbekistan, 5-1, on home soil last month.

The team will next clash with Bahrain in its capital Riffa on October 13. —Marisse Panaligan/JST, GMA News
