How Team Philippines is faring at the 2024 Paris Olympics

It has been almost a week since the 2024 Paris Olympics has opened and the Philippines had its own share of wins and losses in the Summer Games' first five days.

Here's an update on the 22 athletes of the Philippines:

Sam Catantan (fencing)

Catantan opened her campaign last Sunday on a high note as she defeated Brazil's Mariana Pistoia in the Round of 64. However, she fell to Italy's Arianna Erigo in the following round which saw her Olympic run come to an ending.

Kiyomi Watanabe (judo)

Watanabe had an early exit last Tuesday as she lost to China's Tang Jing via ippon in the Round of 32.

Emma Malabuyo, Aleah Finnegan, and Levi Ruivivar (gymnastics)

The three Fil-Am women's gymnasts made their debut for the Philippines in the Olympic stage, but unfortunately failed to advance in the finals after the preliminary rounds.

Eumir Marcial (boxing)

In a shocking turn of events, Marcial absorbed a loss against Uzbekistan's Turabek Khabibullaev in the men's boxing 80kg division Round of 16, which handed the door out for the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist.

Kayla Sanchez (swimming)

Sanchez made her debut for the Philippines in the women's 100m freestyle, placing fourth in her heats to advance to the next round. However, the Fil-Canadian swimmer placed 15th in the semifinals, while only the top eight would advance to the finals.

Hergie Bacyadan (boxing)

Bacyadan stepped onto the Olympic boxing ring for the first time, but ultimately fell to China's Li Qian in the women's boxing 75kg Round of 16.

Joanie Delgaco (rowing)

The Filipino rower finished fourth in the heats of the women's single sculls event which allowed her to be relegated to the repechage. In the repechage, Delgaco finished first to book a slot to the quarterfinals.

However, in the quarters, she finished sixth in her group and only the top three would advance to the semis. With her medal bid done, Delgaco has been relegated to semis C/D and will still compete in the classification round Final D for the ranking.

Aira Villegas (boxing)

Boxer Villegas defeated Morocco's Yasmine Mouttaki via unanimous decision in the women's 50kg Round of 32 and will face Algeria's Roumaysa Boualam on early Friday in the Round of 16.

Nesthy Petecio (boxing)

Petecio opened her campaign with a unanimous decision win against India's Jaismine in the women's 57kg Round of 32. She will fight local bet Amina Zidani in the Round of 16 on early Friday.

Carlo Paalam (boxing)

No goodbyes yet for the Filipino boxer as he won via unanimous decision against Ireland's Jude Gallagher in the Round of 16. He advanced to the quarterfinals and will go against Australia's Charlie Senior in the men's 57kg event.

Carlos Yulo (gymnastics)

Yulo impressed in the preliminary round of the men's gymnastics tournament, allowing him to qualify for the all-around, floor exercise, and vault finals. In the all-around finals, Yulo finished 12th, falling short of a medal. However, he will still compete in the floor exercise finals on August 3 and vault finals on August 4.
