Philippine athletes wear Paris Olympics opening ceremony outfit

Hours before the official opening of 2024 Paris Olympics, athletes who will join the Philippine delegation in the ceremony posted their photos wearing the custom-made barong 'Sinag.'

Olympic silver medalist and one of the flag bearers Nesthy Petecio said she is proud of her outfit.

"Let's go! LABAN!" she wrote in the caption of her post.

Carlo Paalam will also be a flag bearer in the opening ceremony.

Sam Catantan, meanwhile, relished being in the Summer Games ahead of competition proper.

"Dreams do come true! Lalaban Para sa Bayan," the fencer wrote in her caption.

Gymnast Aleah Finnegan also shared a light moment with trackster Lauren Hoffman, as seen on TikTok.

The Philippine Olympic Committee's social media page also shared photos of the delegation.

The outfit was designed by Francis Libiran.

The barong is made from pina-jusi from Kalibo, Aklan and has a detachable contemporary silk organdy blue and red sling, according to Libiran. It is inspired by the Pintados warriors, symbolizing fieriness in battle.

Libiran also said he was commissioned to do the piece by the POC.

"I have to make them shine and stand out on the opening day of the Olympic games," said Libiran.

In Ian Cruz' 24 Oras report on Friday, POC president Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino said Team Philippines is ready for the opening of the Summer Games.

"Ready na kami lahat. All-set na. Excited lahat kasi first time na magkakaroon ng parade not in a stadium," Tolentino said.

The Philippines, meanwhile, will officially start its campaign on Saturday as rower Joanie Delgaco and gymnast Carlos Yulo start their respective competitions.
