Francis Libiran designs barong for PH flagbearers in Paris Olympics

Filipino flagbearers in the 2024 Paris Olympics will wear barongs made by renowned Filipino fashion designer Francis Libiran.

According to a post by the Philippine Olympic Committee on Wednesday, boxers Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam will don the "Sinag" barongs as they carry the Philippine flag during the Olympics' opening ceremony on July 26.

The design consists of an embroidered detachable sling made of silk organdy, bearing the colors of the flag and embroidered sun rays and designs inspired by Pintados warriors.

The barong itself is made out of piña-jusi fabric.

“This barong symbolize[s] bravery and national pride. On the detail, every element of the design showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines,” the post read.

Weightlifter Elreen Ando also shared a photo of herself wearing the piece ahead of the Olympics.
