Alex Eala advances to QF stage in Asian Games 2023; Gilas 3x3 goes 2-0
Alex Eala continued her smashing debut in the 19th Asian Games as the young Filipina netter defeated India's Rutuja Sampatrao, 7-6(5), 6-2, in the women's singles round of 16 on Tuesday in Hangzhou, China.
With the rousing win, the teen ace marched to the quarterfinals stage where she will face Japanese bet Kyoka Okamura.
Eala will also advance in the mixed doubles as she and partner Francis Alcantara eked out a perfect 6-0, 6-0 wn against Nepal's Sunira Thapa and Pranav Khanal in the second round.
Meanwhile, Gilas Pilipinas Men 3x3 stayed perfect in the Asiad after denying Chinese Taipei, 17-12, to go 2-0 in the tournament.
Bryan Sajonia starred for the nationals with six points and seven rebounds while Justine Sanchez and John Rey Pasaol chipped in four markers apiece.
With an immaculate record, Gilas has clinched a spot in the next round.
