Veteran sports editor Joe Antonio passes away at 69

Jose "Joe" Antonio, the longtime sports editor of People's Journal, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 69.

The Philippine Sportswriters Association announced Antonio's passing on Thursday.

Antonio, a native of Cabioa, Nueva Ecija, started his sportswriting career in 1976 at the Times Journal and covered various sports events. He then worked with Tempo and the Manila Times in the early post-EDSA era before returning to the Journal as assistant sports editor.

Antonio became the sports editor of the Journal in 1987 and held the post until the time of his death.

"Simple, down-to-earth, and a friend to everyone, Joe loves horseracing and an avid fan of the late action king Fernando Poe Jr. who uses the pseudonym Daniel Barrion," the PSA said.

Rest in peace, Sir Joe.
