UAAP cancels Season 82 HS tourneys, current format collegiate matches amid COVID-19 scare
The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has canceled all of its high school tournaments, as well as the current format collegiate tournaments for its 82nd Season amid the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
In a statement, the association said this is due to the tougher social distancing measures being implemented by the government from March 15 to April 14, 2020 prohibiting mass gatherings including "sporting events and other entertainment activities."
The UAAP noted that classes in all levels have also been suspended until April 14, 2020.
"With this, the academic calendar for the high school unit of the majority of the member schools would have ended by then thus ending the sporting season," it said.
The UAAP said it will only resume collegiate tournaments should the government deem it safe to resume classes on April 15, 2020, and once again allow mass gatherings.
"If so, the league will work toward alternative formats of competition to begin no earlier than May 1, 2020," the UAAP said.
Collegiate events that have either stopped or have yet to begin are volleyball, football, athletics, tennis, baseball, softball, and 3x3 basketball, according to the UAAP. — MDM, GMA News
