PHL ice hockey team makes history after winning 1st ever SEA Games gold


The Philippines made SEA Games history on Thursday after winning the first ever ice hockey gold medal in the biennial multi-sport event.

The Philippine ice hockey team trumped Thailand, 5-4, in the finals at the Empire City Mall in Damansara Perdana in host country Malaysia.

According to the SEA Games website, the Philippines finished the round robin competition with 11 points while Thailand took silver with nine points.

Malaysia settled for the bronze by defeating Singapore 8-2.

Ice hockey, along with cricket, is introduced in the SEA Games program for the first time.

With the ice hockey team's victory, the Philippines now has 15 gold medals, 18 silver medals, and 31 bronze medals.

The Philippines remains in sixth place with a total medal haul of 64 medals.
