UST shares tradition with UAAP in Season 79 opening

Host school University of Santo Tomas shared a unique tradition bestowed upon its students to other UAAP student-athletes on Saturday in the opening ceremony of UAAP Season 79.

Delegates from the seven UAAP member schools paraded through the historic Arch of the Centuries along Lovers' Lane on the way to Plaza Mayor to kick off the season.

UST's freshmen and graduating students pass through the centuries-old Arch -- declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2010 -- as a sign of starting and ending their collegiate journeys, respectively.

UST Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio Dagohoy, O.P. formally opened Season 79, while UST Growling Tigers team captain Louie Vigil led the Oath of Sportsmanship.

An all-student UST Symphony Orchesta also performed the official theme song of the season titled "Dare to Dream."

A 10-minute pyromusical display capped the opening ceremony atop the Main Building, also an annual tradition at the UST campus during big events. — Joseph Tristan Roxas with Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/LBG, GMA News
