2014 Palarong Pambansa: Team sports is NCR's weak spot

The National Capital Region contingent to this year's Palarong Pambansa was a juggernaut—winning most of the golds—but its weak spot is team sports as indicated by its failure to reach the elementary level finals in baseball, basketball, volleyball, football, softball and volleyball.

NCR's consolation was that it emerged as champion in secondary – boys'  baseball and volleyball, as well as secondary girls' basketball, but it failed to win the coveted gold for high school boys' basketball and football.

NCR was also shut out of the finals in high school girls' volleyball. The showdown there was between Western Visayas and the Davao provinces. Western Visayas won that finals match.

In high school girls' softball, the Western Visayas team defeated NCR.

Key finals matches

Calabarzon's high school basketball gents vanquished their NCR foes, 86 – 80. At halftime, the Region IV-A squad had a 13-point lead.

Scoring in the second half was lower because of  tougher defense. NCR managed to outscore Calabarzon by just one point in the third quarter.

The NCR team tried to turn back Calabarzon in the fourth quarter, but its six-point edge in that frame was just not enough to overcome the lead Calabarzon invested in the first half.
Calabarzon's secondary level basketball boys' team earn the gold, edging out the National Capital Region contingent, 86 - 80, in their championship match in Sta Cruz, Laguna.

The high school girls of NCR fared better against the basketball squad from Central Luzon. NCR won easily, 77 – 54.

In football, the Mimaropa (Mindoro-Marinduque-Romblon-Palawan) side blanked NCR, 2 – 0, with a goal in the first half and another in the second.  — Earl Victor L. Rosero/JDS, GMA News
