(Update) Ex-PBA commissioner Jun Bernardino dies

Former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Emilio "Jun" Bernardino died Saturday after he suffered a heart attack while attending a surprised birthday party for friend Mauricio Martelino, the former Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) secretary general and former FIBA Asia official. GMANews.TV learned that Bernardino helped with the family of Martelino in organizing the party held at the Manila Polo Club last Friday night. The 59-year-old Bernardino was rushed to the Makati Medical Center at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday but was pronounced dead on arrival. "That is very sad. A huge loss to Philippine basketball," BAP-SPB president Manny V. Pangilinan said in a statement. It was learned that Pangilinan invited Bernardino in a meeting of the basketball association on Saturday to discuss the organization's future plan. Bernardino is one of the leading contender for the BAP-SBP's executive director position. Bernardino joined the PBA as commissioner in 1993 and served in that position until 2002. During his tenure, the fans saw the inclusion of Tanduay in 1999 and Red Bull in 2000 in the league. It was also during Bernardino's tenure that Filipino foreigners were given the opportunity to play in the league. After leaving the PBA, he helped in organizing the Shakey's V-League. Bernardino's remains lie at St. Alphonsus de Ligouri Church in Magallanes Village. He left his wife children Stephanie, Rishi, Nolan and Marga, Vera and Kristine. - GMANews.TV
