DLSU claims back-to-back UAAP General Championships

La Salle may still be hurting from its loss in women’s volleyball but the Green Archers will lift the biggest trophy after winning the general championship of the UAAP Season 76.

The closing ceremony is set for Wednesday at the Century Park Hotel Grand Ballroom in Manila.

La Salle bagged five titles — men’s and women’s basketball, men’s taekwondo and table tennis and women’s chess — to win the overall crown for the second straight season.

The Taft-based team tallied 289 points, while University of Santo Tomas took second spot with 274 points despite winning only two events — women’s taekwondo and poomsae. The Tigers gained points with second-place finishes in men’s beach volleyball, taekwondo and athletics and in women’s beach volleyball, fencing and athletics.

UST has the most wins with 39 titles, followed by Far Eastern University with 16.

University of the Philippines also bagged only two championships — women’s swimming and table tennis — but had runner-up performances in seven events for 235 points.

That put the Maroons in third spot, ahead of Ateneo, which posted 187 points with titles in five events — men’s and women’s badminton, men’s judo and baseball and women’s volleyball.

FEU also ruled five events — sweeping athletics and football and topping men’s chess — but could only wind up in fifth spot with 115 points.

National University highlighted its season with victories in men’s volleyball and beach volleyball and a sweep of the seniors tennis events to place sixth with 154 points.

University of the East won championships in men’s and women’s fencing for 67 points and seventh place.

Adamson University, which does not have teams in nine of the 29 events on the UAAP program, marked its hosting of the season with an amazing and historic sweep of women’s softball but finished in eighth place overall with 108 points.  - SPIN
