UAAP: UE vs UP round one preview and live-scoring

Game starts at 2pm. Page auto-refreshes every 30 seconds.

The University of the East Red Warriors will try to send the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons into the second round without a win, when these two squads tangle at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Saturday, in the penultimate game day of round one of the UAAP.

UE (3-3) seems to be rounding into form, notching back-to-back wins against the ADMU Blue Eagles and the DLSU Green Archers, following a 1-3 start to the season. Point guard Roi Sumang and center Charles Mammie have been there in the two wins, but more importantly, they're getting contributions from the role players, with Dan Alberto notching 14 versus Ateneo and Chris Javier tallying 16 against La Salle.

For all their offensive prowess though, UE's defense will need to show some life versus UP, a team that struggles to score (just 66.4 points per game, last in the UAAP). Right now, the Red Warriors concede 42.4 percent field goal shooting, 47.1 percent inside the arc, both league-worst clips. If they let the Maroons stick around, they could find themselves in a slugfest late.

UP (0-6) on the other hand last fell to a UST Growling Tigers squad that gave extended minutes to third-stringers like Robin Tan, Jan Macasaet, Kent Lao, Robert Hainga and Jeepy Faundo. The Season 75 runners-up however flipped the switch in the second half, proceeding to shoot 50 percent from the field en route to inflicting the sixth loss on the Fighting Maroons.

Big man Raul Soyud was suspended for that UST game, and the Maroons really could have used his scoring (8.6 points, third-most on UP) and rebounding (10.8 rebounds, first on UP), in addition to his defense versus Karim Abdul. Chris Ball was able to pick up the slack on the glass (11 boards), but he and Martin Pascual combined for just 14 markers on 5-of-15 shooting, while conceding 14 points and eight rebounds to Abdul, who only played 24 minutes.

Game starts at 2pm.
