UAAP volleyball: FEU men, UST women are champs


The Far Eastern University (FEU) and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) split the UAAP Season 69 men's and women's volleyball titles, respectively. The FEU Tamaraws clinched its third straight men's title over the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, while the UST Tigresses won the women's crown over the Lady Tamaraws. According to a UAAP press statement released on Thursday, FEU dethroned UP, 25-13, 25-11, 25-20, to sweep the men's best-of-three series. The Tamaraws also won Game One, 25-16, 25-22, 25-21, on Sunday. FEU's Edget Mabbayad was chosen Most Valuable Player and UST's Marlon Macabulos was named Rookie of the Year. Jeremy Pedragosa was picked the Best Spiker, Jessie Lopez was Best Server, and Mark Sibug was Best Digger. They are all from FEU. UP also got its share of the men's individual awards: Virgilio Vizcarra as Best Receiver, Gianan Guarenio as Best Setter, and Loyd Areden Belgado as Best Blocker. The Tigresses, on the other hand, regained the title by hacking out a 25-11, 25-22, 25-19 win over the Lady Tamaraws, thus denying FEU of a sweep this season. UST's Venus Bernal was the women's Most Valuable Player and Best Spiker, while Irish May Morada of FEU was picked Rookie of the Year, The other individual women awardees: • FEU's Mary Ann Manalo as Best Spiker and Rachel Ann Daquis as Best Server • Ateneo's Bea Pascual as Best Blocker • UST's Denise Patricia Tan as Best Setter • Adamson U's Adajar Donalei as Best Receiver and Patricia Lynn Taganas as Best Digger. Bernal and Ma. Angeli Tabaquero provided the firepower for the Tigresses, who this time made sure they would not struggle as they had done in Game One on Sunday when they were extended to four sets, 25-14, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20. In high school volleyball, the University of the East (UE) fashioned out a thrilling 25-17, 19-25, 25-8, 20-25, 15-10 win over UST to clinch its fifth straight crown at the UE Gym 5. UE's Michael Reyes was named Most Valuable Player for the second straight year while Kim Bagos of UST was selected Rookie of the Year. - GMANews.TV
