UAAP fencing: UE, Ateneo bag titles
University of the East (UE) won a second consecutive men 's crown in the UAAP Season 69 fencing tournament but lost its women's title to Ateneo. Bonifacio Jacinto and Don King Decena scored a 1-2 finish in the men's sabre to help the UE Warriors retain their crown in the tournament held over the weekend at the Blue Eagle gym in Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City. According to official results sent Monday to media organizations, Jacinto and Decena also joined forces to power the Recto-based fencers in notching the gold medal in the team saber. UE wound up its successful Season 69 with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Nathaniel Guttierez also contributed to the Warriors coffers by bagging a bronze medal in men 's foil. University of Santo Tomas (UST) settled for second place with a 2-1-2 gold-silver-bronze collection. The Tigers, behind Arnel Bernal and Harris Orendain, ruled the foil team event. Bernal and Orendain also won gold and silver in individual foil. Ateneo slipped to third place with a 2-1-1 haul while UP (0-2-3) and former titlist Far Eastern University (0-0-1) were fourth and fifth, respectively. The Lady Eagles clinched their first league title after dethroning heavily-favored UE. Victoria Grace Garcia dominated women's foil while Faye Garcia and Stella Marie Sacdalan won silver and bronze also in foil and sabre to help Ateneo capture the title. UP was second with a 2-1-2 production while UE was third with 2-1-1. UST landed fourth with 0-3-3. Ateneo's Bonifacio Jacinto won the men's Most Valubale Player honors while Orendain of UST was named Rookie of the Year.
