UAAP: FEU vs NU preview and live-scoring (2nd round replay)

Game starts at 4pm. Page auto-refreshes every 30 seconds. Second round encounter: The Far Eastern University Tamaraws thought they had the National University Bulldogs beat when RR Garcia connected on a game-winning lay-up for a 77-75 victory, last September 2. Unfortunately, the UAAP Board felt that one couldn't tell if the former MVP got his shot off before the buzzer, and ordered the two squads to a replay, one that will decide the Final Four cast. Key stats: It was a superb team effort from both supporting casts, as FEU and NU found big-time contributions from less-heralded players. For the Tamaraws, Russel Escoto came off the bench for a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds, while Gelo Alolino also notched a career-best 18 markers. Unfortunately, both those numbers won't count any more due to the ordered replay. NU had a huge advantage in the free throw department, but couldn't convert as well as FEU, going 14-of-22 versus 8-of-11. FEU did flourish through the extra pass however, tallying 20 assists, nine from Garcia, versus only 13 by NU. Ultimately for the host team Bulldogs, things boiled down to fourth-quarter execution. Down by seven entering the fourth quarter, FEU went on to shoot 50 percent from the floor, versus the 35.7 percent of NU. Part of that was outside shooting. FEU was 4-of-8 on treys, versus only 1-of-7 from NU. Far Eastern also had a substantial assist advantage, 5-1. What's at stake: For NU, it's all about survival. If they lose, they don't make the Final Four. Win, and it's a third seed for them, while FEU must face a deadly DLSU team in a playoff for fourth. A more in-depth look at the Final Four situation can be found here. What does FEU have to do? Win the battle of the perimeter. FEU is currently ranked third in 3pt field goal percentage (28.1). NU on the other hand has taken more three-point attempts (285 versus FEU's 253) but converts at a lower rate, just 23.9 percent. Similarly, NU has the worst three-point defense (32 percent allowed) while FEU is tops in that category (23.5 percent allowed). If the Tams can catch fire, while forcing the Bulldogs into long-range misses, they could easily topple their foes. What does NU have to do? Get to the line early and often, and make free throws. The host school has gone to the line nearly 100 more times than FEU despite playing the same amount of games. And when they get to the charity stripe, they make them at a higher rate, 69 percent to 58 percent. Things also become much easier for them if they can get the Tamaraw bigs in foul trouble. Arvie Bringas is still suspended, and that means Far Eastern will be a man short in their front court rotation. FEU projected starting-five: Terrence Romeo (26 points on 9/20 FG, 3/5 FT, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal vs DLSU), RR Garcia, Gryann Mendoza, Russel Escoto, Anthony Hargrove NU projected starting-five: Bobby Ray Parks (17 points on 5/13 FG, 7/7 FT, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 block vs UP), Emmanuel Mbe, Troy Rosario, Gelo Alolino, Denice Villamor - AMD, GMA News
