UAAP: DLSU vs NU preview and live-scoring (round 2)

Game starts at 4pm. Page auto-refreshes every 30 seconds. First round meeting: The National University Bulldogs had enough in their arsenal to force two overtime periods, but they finally ran out of firepower after ten additional minutes, falling 87-86 to the De La Salle University Green Archers, last August 18 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. La Salle seemed in control early, pulling out to a five-point halftime lead, 42-37, but NU came out on fire in the third quarter to tie the game at 42-all. In response, the Archers unleashed a 15-3 bomb that gave them a double-digit advantage, 57-45, but triples from Robin Rono and Troy Rosario cut that down to 59-52, entering the fourth quarter. It was NU's turn to catch fire in the fourth, as a 15-2 run had them up by a point, 67-66, with 47 seconds before the buzzer. Veterans Yutien Andrada and Almond Vostros struck back to give DLSU a two-point cushion, but Rosario was there to force overtime with a buzzer-beating drive. In the first overtime, it was all Bobby Ray Parks for NU, as he was responsible for eight of his side's 10 points. That included a put-back of his own miss and two pressure-packed charities to send the game to a second extension, 79-all. There, DLSU started off with two huge triples by Jeron Teng and Vosotros. Parks charities and an Emmanuel Mbe offensive carom sandwiched a freebie by Teng, but offensive rebounds proved to be the key, as La Salle got several repossessions to burn the clock. By the time Parks was able to score again, it was a desperation three-pointer that served only to shrink the gap in the final score, 87-86. Key stats: La Salle was able to blunt the NU run-and-gun game effectively. Despite playing two overtime periods, the Bulldogs scored just seven fast break points and 11 turnover points. And of their 29 field goals, just nine came off an assist, numbers far away from their averages. La Salle on the other hand was able to get 17 extra passes on 32 field goals. They also made just 15 turnovers, which was a big factor considering how star point guard LA Revilla played just 26 minutes off the bench. The Archers also got the better of NU in another Bulldogs favorite: three-point shooting. DLSU converted on 9-of-25 triple tries, versus just a 6-of-26 clip by NU. Then in the battle of stars, both Jeron Teng and Bobby Ray Parks finished with 35 points each. Teng's though came on better field goal percentage (14-of-24 versus 10-of-23), but Parks' 12-of-17 clip from the foul line simply overshadowed Teng's 3-of-5 charity stint. The reigning MVP also did more in other categories, adding seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. DLSU needs to: Limit NU from getting out on the break and scoring off turnovers. The La Salle point guards, especially if LA Revilla doesn't play, need to step up and control the tempo, and avoid turning the game into a track meet. The team as a whole has to guard Bobby Ray Parks better too, by forcing him into jump shots and not sending him to the line. NU needs to: Avoid becoming overly reliant on Bobby Ray Parks for their scoring. Emmanuel Mbe and Henri Betayene can control the paint for them, and throwing it down low to their big men, who will have the advantage over the DLSU front court, is just a better option compared to settling for low-percentage perimeter shots. DLSU (7-4) projected starting five: Jeron Teng (19 points on 5/7 FG, 8/14 FT, 5 rebounds, 2 assists vs UP), Norbet Torres, Thomas Torres, Jed Manguera, Yutien Andrada NU (6-4) projected starting five: Bobby Ray Parks (21 points on 5/10 FG, 10/11 FT, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal vs UE), Jeoffrey Javillonar, Henri Betayene, Gelo Alolino, Denice Villamor - AMD, GMA News
