Game starts at 4pm. Page auto-refreshes every 30 seconds. First round meeting: The De La Salle University Green Archers overcame a late comeback attempt by the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, to win the season-opener of both schools,
73-68, last July 15 at the SM MOA Arena. A split at the foul line by Norbert Torres put DLSU up by a whopping 16 points, 56-40, with two minutes left in the third quarter. But the Maroons kept true to their name, unleashing a 15-2 run that had them within three points, 58-55, with 7:07 still to play. Baskets by rookie sensation Jeron Teng and center Norbert Torres created some separation between them and UP, 67-59, but the Fighting Maroons still had one more charge in them. A jumper and two charities by Mike Silungan, followed by a huge pair of baskets by Alvin Padilla swung the lead back to UP, 68-67, 44 seconds left. Unfortunately for State U, they couldn’t sustain their late blitz, and essentially ran out of gas, as La Salle went on to score the game’s last six points, allowing them to start their campaign on a bright note.
Key stats: Things could have been a lot easier for the Green Archers had they hit free throws in this game. DLSU was 18-of-27 from the stripe, 10-of-17 in the second half, compared to a perfect 14-of-14 clip by UP. For the season, DLSU is shooting just 59.9 percent from the line, seventh in the league. La Salle was also pretty bad from long-distance, just 1-of-11. They've improved since then though, and are fourth in that category now at 27 percent. UP on the other hand made 4-of-19, but have slumped to last place in three-point accuracy, shooting 23.5 percent. The stat to watch though will likely be rebounding. DLSU averages a league-best 46.9 per game, while UP is once again, dead-last in that category, with just 38.2 boards in each outing.
DLSU needs to: Dominate the interior, both in points and rebounds. Big men like Norbert Torres and Arnold Van Opstal have the advantage over Chris Ball and Raul Soyud, and this match-up could be just the thing for Torres to snap out of his funk. He scored a season-high 16 points in their first round game and has struggled to regain that form since. The Archers could be without the services of LA Revilla once more though. The point guard has missed four games so far, and his ability to lead the team was sorely missed in their last game versus ADMU. Rookies Thomas Torres and Mac Tallo played a combined 18 fruitless minutes, forcing Almond Vosotros on to the floor for a team-high 35 minutes.
UP needs to: Exploit the absence of LA Revilla, should he be out once more by pressuring the rookie La Salle ball-handlers. The Maroons are one of the best teams in getting steals (6.5 per game) and turnover points (16.4 per game) so that will play to their strengths. If they can keep the game close, they'll also need better endgame execution, UP's weakness in multiple close losses.
DLSU projected starting five: Jeron Teng (22 points on 6/21 FG, 8/12 FT, 5 rebounds, 2 assists vs ADMU), Arnold Van Opstal, Norbert Torres, Jed Manguera, Thomas Torres
UP projected starting five: Chris Ball (14 points on 5/9 FG, 4/4 FT, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks vs UE), Mike Silungan, Alvin Padilla, JR Gallanza, Henry Asilum
