Lyceum completes double title victory in WNCAA

Lyceum of the Philippines completed a WNCAA double title win over the weekend when the Lady Pirates bagged their fourth straight basketball crown and pocketed their 10th consecutive volleyball title at the St. Scholastica's College gym. The Lady Pirates erased College of St. Benilde’s eight-point second half lead to score a 52-48 win and complete a sweep in the best-of-three basketball finals.

Arlene Gesalan and Jona Maye Yasay combined for 26 points to lead Lyceum’s charge that more than made up for most valuable player (MVP) Jessica Poliney’s so-so game. In the volleyball finals, Lyceum also went through the eye of the needle in beating Rizal Technological University in five sets, 25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11, to also win the title via sweep. The title victory also kept the Lady Pirates undefeated this season. In the Senior B volleyball finals, University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) also swept its best-of-three finals against Centro Escolar University, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 15-10. But in the Senior B basketball title series, UA&P forced a deciding Game 3 with a 51-46 triumph over La Consolacion College-Manila. The victory gave UA&P the chance to sweep the Senior B basketball and volleyball titles if it wins over La Consolacion on Sunday. La Consalacion took the lead in the series with 58-57 win in Game 1. Meanwhile, UA&P’s Auroro Biolena was named Senior B basketball MVP while Lyceum’s Joy Gazelle Cases was adjudged as Senior A volleyball MVP and UA&P’s Selina Artadi was chosen as Senior B volleyball MVP. – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV
