Brazil beats US to earn first women’s volleyball gold

BEIJING – Brazil has won its first gold medal in women's volleyball with a 3-1 victory over the United States. Brazil won 25-18, 18-25, 25-13 25-21 in Saturday's final, completing an undefeated run through the Olympic competition. The US team's Olympics started an a tragic note when the father of a former Olympic teammate was fatally stabbed at a popular tourist site hours after the opening ceremonies. The competition was also marked by the return of US coach Jenny Lang Ping to her hometown. Lang led the Chinese team to the gold medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Games with a final-match victory over the United States. – AP
