Melvin Jerusalem makes successful world title defense vs Luis Castillo

Melvin Jerusalem made a successful first defense of his WBC world strawweight title following a lopsided unanimous decision win over the previously unbeaten Luis Castillo on Sunday at Mandaluyong City College.

Jerusalem, 30, dropped the no.1 ranked contender from Mexico in the opening round. Castillo, to his credit, managed to beat the count and weathered the storm until the stanza ended.

It was all Jerusalem from there as he utilized his quick jab and trademark right straight both to the head and body. Castillo showcased his resilience and overall toughness as he continued to fight but was outgunned and outboxed throughout the contest.

All three judges saw the fight for Jerusalem after twelve rounds of action, improving his professional boxing record to 23-3 with 12 knockouts while Castillo tasted defeat for the first time as he dropped to 21-1-1 with 13 knockouts.

The scorecards were 120-107, 120-107, and 118-109.
