PCG: Nesthy Petecio to be promoted to higher rank after Olympic bronze medal win

Nesthy Petecio will be promoted from Petty Officer Second Class to Petty Officer First Class after winning a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Friday.

Coast Guard commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan said Petecio’s win is an inspiring achievement for the youth.

"On behalf of the men and women of PCG, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to CG PO2 Nesthy Petecio, for bringing home the BRONZE MEDAL in the Olympics 2024 Women's Boxing Event!” Gavan said in a statement.

Gavan said Petecio exhibited “the true spirit of a champion” and became “an inspiration not only to your fellow coast guardians but to countless Filipinos in reaching their dreams.”

“We are immensely proud of your achievement and together with your family and fellow Coast Guardians, we celebrate your accomplishment with great joy and jubilation. Mabuhay ka, CG PO2 Petecio! Bravo Zulu!" he added.

On Thursday, Petecio claimed the bronze medal after a match against Poland's Julia Szeremeta in the 2024 Paris Olympics women's boxing 57kg semifinals.

Petecio lost on points via split decision, 4-1.

She was assured of the bronze medal after winning her bout against China's Zichun Xu in the quarterfinal round.

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. earlier praised the Filipina boxer and said that the Philippines is proud of her.

''Congratulations, Nesthy! Thank you for bringing home the bronze medal for the Philippines,'' Marcos said.

''You've truly shown the world how Filipinos never back down from a challenge. The whole country is proud of you! Taas kamao, para sa boxingerong Pilipino,''  he added.
