Nesthy Petecio wins vs French bet for QF slot in Olympic boxing
Nesthy Petecio inched closer to another Olympic medal as she won against hometown bet Amina Zidani of France in the Round of 16 of the women's boxing 57kg event of the 2024 Paris Olympics on early Saturday (Philippine time) at the North Paris Arena.
Petecio won by points, 30-27, 28-29, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, to book a slot to the quarterfinals and moved a win away from a guaranteed medal in the Summer Games.
With the crowd in Paris on her side, Zidani took Round 1, 3-2, as Petecio was somehow cautious in the said frame.
However, Petecio had strong punches in the next round as she eventually found her way through and swept the judges' score cards.
In the deciding round, Petecio showed what she got and impressed with her power on the ring.
As the final decision was announced, Petecio just screamed on top of her lungs while the French boxer was shocked with what happened.
With the win, Petecio will face China's Zichun Xu in the quarterfinals on Sunday night.
Prior to the Round of 16 win, Petecio defeated India's Jaismine in the Round of 32.
